Following POPS

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

Spring has sprung at Amity; everywhere you turn there are flip-flops, shorts, and skirts. While spring brings along good weather and comfy clothes, spring is also a huge season for Amity’s Music and Theater departments. Following the acclaimed Spring Musical, Les Misérables, comes the Spring Band and Choir concert (Tuesday, May 11th) and the Spring Strings concert (Thursday, May 13th). Both should be great, and as always all students, parents, and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend!

Personally, whenever spring rolls around, I wait in anticipation for POPS—a largely student-run musical talent show. This year’s POPS theme is "Paparazzi," drawing inspiration from the uprising singer Lady Gaga, but not centered on her work. It is expected, however, to be a huge success.

"I think this year’s theme is great!" says co-executive producer Mr. Kennedy "We’re going all out with this theme. This includes decorating the hallway outside of the auditorium, and rolling out the red carpet. We will even have photographers that will be taking photos of audience members. The show will also feature an incredible video system, with big screens showing a live video-feed…it will definitely feel like you’re viewing a concert! We’ve even hired a lighting designer to ensure the professional lighting. Overall, we’re really trying to make sure that there is a huge production value. "

The other two executive producers, Mr. Hickerson and Mr. Dolan, were enthused about the amount of talent in this year’s perspective acts. "We had 60 acts audition, the largest pool to audition ever. There were so many amazing auditions that we had to increase the size of the show to 18 acts!"

POPS will be held on June 11th and 12th in the auditorium. Tickets have not gone on sale yet, but they are sure to sell out quickly. The emcees are soon to be announced, so grab a friend, some money, and be sure to look your finest, because the paparazzi will be watching!
