Oceans

On Earth Day, 2010, Disney Nature, the organization that released Earth last year in celebration of Earth Day, released Oceans, a remarkable tribute to what makes up 75% of our Earth. Directed by Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud, the footage in Oceans is so stunning that audiences have a difficult time moving their eyes from the screen even to blink.

Within the opening scene, a marine iguana walks on what seems to be a rocky coast. However, much to the audience’s surprise, the rocky coast turns out to be hundreds of other marine iguanas. This notifies the audience that this film will certainly be something unlike anything experienced before.

From the incredible footage of peaceful humpback whales to the rare account of a blue whale, the audience at Oceans is sure to experience a wide array of emotions during this film. One might be disgusted when thousands of crabs go to battle, but will most definitely be in awe of the agility of dolphins at play. The little boy next to you might scream "Cool!" when a great white shark eats a seal, but will certainly secretly wish the seal escaped.

Regardless of how one may feel during this film, it is nevertheless nearly impossible to fathom that real cameramen were able to capture each scene. One would normally not even realize this until the end, where the audience sees a hammerhead shark with a cameraman swimming closely beside it.

While some might argue that it is too much to sit and see pictures of the ocean for an hour and a half, the remarkable footage featured in Disney’s Oceans is far from what we are used to. Skilled cameramen traveled across the world to follow both rare and populous species on their journeys.

Also notable is Pierce Brosnan’s narration of the film, teeming with surprising facts about the different species.

Oceans succeeds at inspiring people to protect the Earth by showing just how naturally beautiful our planet truly is. The film encourages people to take action and reverse damage that has been done to our planet. Hopefully, after seeing Disney Nature’s inspiring films, everyone might feel more compelled to heal the injured planet.

I would highly recommend Oceans for anyone. It is simply a pleasure for your eyes to behold.
